novel

What classifies a book to be a classic novel?  I asked this as I have finished our first book from our book club choice (which I won’t discuss since we haven’t met yet).  I asked this question because to define a movie classic is quite simple, box office sales, word or mouth, rental sales says it all.  You have the evidence and you know it was a hit and then the classics rise up to the top.  The list are generated and the public tends to agree.

Now classic novels, as you read the list, you wonder how the made the list.  Did literary professors find reasons of their own and then through time just force these books upon young adult after young adult and they are just considered classics?

Some classics I’m sure make valid points, teach us lessons and hit home in our hearts; others I would need to have a literary professor explain to me how and why it made the “classic” list.

Again, is it sales and word of mouth or is it just a test of time with literary experts?  This book, Main Street, is considered a classic and I guess I would need someone to explain to me why.  I have ideas, but I’m just a little fuzzy on completely why.  We will discuss I’m sure and then hopefully I can get some insight.  Until then I need to do some research on what classifies a classic!
