grocery

There is another reason I’m totally single (OK those that know me, there are many - don’t start), but the thing is, when given opportunities I’m clueless.

I had to grocery shop late tonight.  I didn’t even get to Kroger until around 10:30 PM and there was the cutest man in aisle, oh I don’t know, it was the drink aisle.  Anyway, he said hi and made some kind of joke about the prices of cokes being more than his mortgage (which by the way what is up with that lately?).  I laughed and we both chose Pepsi.  He said something like, “Well at least you have good taste.”  I smiled and I just didn’t have anything to say.  Yep I’m a dork.

We meet again in the milk/breakfast snack section and he says hi again and says something like are you a 1% or a whole milk person.  I said, “Well honestly I just don’t do milk but for cooking purposes I would have to say 1%.”  He again says, “Again, we seem to be on target.”  I replied, “Yes we do.”  But here is the thing, he just smiled and sort of moved on with his shopping.

Was I supposed to say something else?  I of course am clueless and I’m not sure I want to date anyway, but did I mention he was cute?  He was just finishing up checking out when I get up TO the check out and he says, “Be careful with your items and I’ll see ya again I’m sure, I can’t stay away from Kroger.”  What is that?  So I’m supposed to “hope” and see this guy again in the store?  Yeah I’ve been going to this Kroger for, I don’t know 15 years and I’ve never seen him before, but yeah, I’m sure he will see me again.

Yes, I’m a man pick up genius aren’t I?  ha ha!  I rock!  This is yet another reason why I’m still single!

I know this has been discussed for years, through various groups of people, men vs. women, but now I just have to put my two cents in about it.

I of course being the girl, always have to stand in the girls line at various places and the last dreaded place was the Colts game.  Jerry jumped into the men’s room and within a minute he was out.  I get it, go in, whip it out, put it away, wash hands, come out, you’re done.  What I don’t get is what takes a girl any longer?

I wonder what some women do behind the stalls in a public restroom?  I’m in there and I still don’t get it.  If you take a child in, I totally get it, but I’m talking alone.  Again, you go in, you pull down shorts, pants, whatever, you pee and then you pull it back up and you come out.  How hard is this concept?  I would think the delay would be at the bathroom mirror with the prissy time and whatnot trying to look good at the game for your boyfriend or whatever that concept is that I don’t get either.

I wait in line watching these women go in and they have on basic clothes; shorts or pants.  They get in there and behind that little stall door they just stay and stay AND even if they have a female issue how long can this take?  Give me a break right?  What are they doing behind the door.  I’m in and out because also lets factor that it’s not really clean and I don’t want to hang out in there too long.

It’s a mystery and I’ve always felt like a lesser woman because I don’t linger in the bathroom, but then I talk to all my girlfriends and they say the same thing - who are all these freak women dragging out this process? We see them, but no one claims them.  Are they just slow in general?  It makes me crazy.  We all know I’d go in the men’s room and not blink an eye, but I’m sure security would have issues.  I actually have at smaller places with the help of friends!

If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to share!

Our town’s Festival Parade is this Saturday.  It kicks off our Harvest Homecoming which is the following weekend.  As parades go it’s pretty good.  We’ve seen good years and we’ve seen bad years.  However, we go and we have fun regardless because it’s a parade and we make our own fun!

We always sit on the same street corner and we have since my parents have been going to the parade since it’s existence in 1967.  It’s across the street from the house where my mom grew up and my dad worked at the original New Albany Tribune.  It’s a good spot and everyone knows to find us there.  We take our lunches, drinks, snacks, chairs and whatever else we think we might need and from Noon until 4:00 PM we take over the corner!

If you have never been to the parade, shame on you and come see it this year.  If you’ve missed it for the past few years, come on back.  It’s a nice day.  After the parade IUS offers a Tasting Party and it’s really nice.  It’s quite a few restaurants in New Albany and you can taste their best foods.  Plenty of food and a really good time.

The following day, Sunday is the balloon lift off at IUS (weather permitting) and they have their parking lot filled with pumpkin decorating, jumpy things, music, vending foods, corn hole, mini golf, and some other things for kids.  The balloons lift off around 5:00 PM and it’s always a nice afternoon to watch them lift off.  It’s a great way to spend time with the kiddos!

Nice weekend items for kids if you want them to have a pleasant time outside this weekend and most of the stuff if free except for some of the stuff at IUS requires tickets!  Have fun!

tv

I got a new TV last Wednesday and it doesn’t fit in my entertainment center.  OK, no big deal Jerry and I say.  We have moved redecorated countless rooms together and handled numerous situations just like this one.  This is what we do.  We will deal with it this weekend.  Piece of cake.

We discuss it later in the week and analyze my living room.  I have a very large living room area.  The thing is though, it’s awkwardly shaped and their is a fireplace at one end. (this is a pain in the behind)  Then you have limited plugs and a vent for the air and heat.  The room is just a pain to deal with, but it has a ton of space.  It’s a challenge.

We take it on based on where to put this TV with a new table to sit the TV on, but the thing is we can’t find a table for the TV yet so we have to pretend we know what size it will be and how much space it will take up.  We also have to decide where the Christmas tree will go in less than 2 months!

This is a process that took an entire day and a few trips to various stores looking for the right TV table (AND we didn’t find one by the way).

All this effort because one new piece of furniture came into a living room.  Is it worth it?  I’m starting to think NO!  We’ll see, if I don’t find the right table I may just give in and hang it on the wall!

We heard from a few people to try this new Mexican Restaurant in New Albany.  It’s located at 1515 East Market Street right before you get to Tommy Lancaster’s Restaurant.

We decided to try it Sunday afternoon.  Yeah, big mistake.  I can’t imagine what people like about this place.  We had to park around back and lets just say I wouldn’t go there after dark unless I had Jerry with me, or a group of people and even then I’d still have a fear my car would be jacked with based on the neighborhood back there.

The food:  We ordered cheese sauce right off the bat and it was good so I thought, “OK, so far - so good.”  They don’t give you free chips and salsa and what’s up with that?  Do you know of a Mexican Restaurant that doesn’t?  Can you say El’Cheapo?  We decided to order some anyway so we could sample it.

It cost $2.50 and I’m thinking she’ll bring me a bowl of Salsa right?  She brings us three, clear, ketchup bottles full of liquid (yeah she did). One is green, one is orange and one is brown.  None look like salsa.  She explains the green is avocado, the orange is chipolte and the brown is some smokey, flavored crap.  None are any good and here is the thing - you have to either squirt the crap on your chip or squirt the crap on your plate and then try to scrape it up with your chip.  Either way, it sucks.

Moving on……..I ordered the chicken nachos and the chicken was awful.  It was sort of prepared like Qdoba, but not the flavor.  It was chunks of chicken and the flavor was just indescribable.  The cheese sauce (again good) was hot, but then they sprinkled this feta like cheese on top and it was awful.  It stuck to your lips and to your teeth when you tried to chew the food.  I hated it and from a texture standpoint, it freaked me out.

Jerry got a dish that was very pretty, but it seemed to have a ton of cilantro in it.  I noticed on their menu EVERY item had cilantro.  They need to be called La Cilantro.  It’s a huge herb and has a lot of flavor.  Oh, and the rice, dry and plain, NO FLAVOR.

The service was really good, quick and she was nice.  That had nothing to do with the food sucking.  I would take no one here or recommend it to anyone.  We will not go back, it was not worth giving them a second chance.  Sorry just not my place.

leather

I don’t think this movie got great reviews, but all-in-all it was pretty good.  You can’t go wrong with George Clooney, come on.

It had that quaint charm and humor that you can’t “not” like and it had a good cast.  What can you complain about?  It explained how football changed in the 1920’s and a commissioner was needed to get agent’s in line and create rules to make the game fair.  That was just the back storyline though.

It was also about two characters; one older (George) and one younger, (John Krasinski from The Office) who fall in love with the same girl (Renee Zellweger) and fight for her love.  She of course is a reporter trying to bring to light a falsehood about John’s character from his Army days.

It’s a romantic comedy and it’s funny, again what more could you want and the guys are just cute if your a girl and if you like Renee that’s enough if you’re a guy renting this to hold your interest past the football sections.  Honestly I would think guys would like this due to all the football scenes; it’s totally based around a football theme, but again in a funny, comedic way.

I really liked it and I’m not sure why it got slammed so badly in the reviews.

88

This movie has it all; suspense, drama, action and a little hint of romance (no sex).  It’s starts out with giving you the story line and you jump into the action.  After that you don’t stop until the ending scene and it’s fasted paced all the way.

It’s one of those, “Could the killer be this person, no wait maybe it’s this person, oh wait, I think it’s this one, oh crap I don’t really know for sure.”  I LOVE those kind of movies.

He gets the phone call of course stating, “Doc, you have 88 minutes to live” and then later you get the explanation as to why 88 minutes.  It’s a gruesome reason why also, I didn’t like that part!

This is an awesome movie and I’m not normally into Al’s movies but he does a good job at being the forensic scientist and solving the crime.  The cast is pretty good along side of him and again, you have a lot of suspects to choose from through the movie.

I recommend this for just about anyone if you like suspense and action.

novel

What classifies a book to be a classic novel?  I asked this as I have finished our first book from our book club choice (which I won’t discuss since we haven’t met yet).  I asked this question because to define a movie classic is quite simple, box office sales, word or mouth, rental sales says it all.  You have the evidence and you know it was a hit and then the classics rise up to the top.  The list are generated and the public tends to agree.

Now classic novels, as you read the list, you wonder how the made the list.  Did literary professors find reasons of their own and then through time just force these books upon young adult after young adult and they are just considered classics?

Some classics I’m sure make valid points, teach us lessons and hit home in our hearts; others I would need to have a literary professor explain to me how and why it made the “classic” list.

Again, is it sales and word of mouth or is it just a test of time with literary experts?  This book, Main Street, is considered a classic and I guess I would need someone to explain to me why.  I have ideas, but I’m just a little fuzzy on completely why.  We will discuss I’m sure and then hopefully I can get some insight.  Until then I need to do some research on what classifies a classic!
